BetterPrivacy

Description

BetterPrivacy for Firefox, Super-Cookie Safeguard (protects from LSO Flash Objects, DOM Storage Objects). Better Privacy serves to protect against undeletable longterm cookies, a new generation of 'Super-Cookie', which silently conquered the internet. This new cookie generation offers unlimited user tracking to industry and market research. Concerning privacy Flash- and DOM Storage objects are most critical.Flash-cookies (Local Shared Objects, LSO) are pieces of information placed on your computer by a Flash plugin. Those Super-Cookies are placed in central system folders and so protected from deletion. They are frequently used like standard browser cookies. Although their thread potential is much higher as of conventional cookies, only few users began to take notice of them. It is of frequent occurrence that -after a time- hundreds of those Flash-cookies reside in special folders. And they won't be deleted - never!BetterPrivacy can stop them, e.g. by allowing to silently remove those objects on every browser exit. So this extension becomes sort of "install and forget add-on". Usually automatic deletion is safe (no negative impact on your browsing), especially if the deletion timer is activated. The timer can delay automatic deletion for new or modified Flash-cookies which might be in use. It also allows to delete those objects immediately if desired. With BetterPrivacy it is possible to review, protect or delete new Flash-cookies individually. Users who wish to to manage all cookies manually can disable the automatic functions. BetterPrivacy also protects against 'DOM Storage' longterm tracking, a browser feature which has been granted by the major browser manufactures.BetterPrivacy removes Flash cookies according to the addon settings, usually when Firefox closes. However, on the Flashplayer's company website you will also find a "Settings Manager" which offers two options:
- Globally disable storage of any objects.
- Partially disable storage on selected blacklisted domains
Note that those methods have a couple of disadvantages:
a) Many sites have been reported to deny their service -or to not load at all- if Flash cookie data storage is disabled by the settings manager. But with BetterPrivacy's delayed deletion methods those services would work since cookie storage is still allowed while you are browsing. BetterPrivacy does not deny object storage - it just prevents that stored information is kept forever.
b) If you decide to blacklist special domains, the website settings cookies still remain existent (allowing to trace your web history) - and also a complete list of all configured/visited flash sites is kept with the blacklisting.
c) The settings manager offers a site blacklist only - whereas BetterPrivacy provides a white-list. Using the blacklist feature usually is cumbersome because you need to check for new cookies every session. Every flash domain (including all the invisible flash applications in scripts) require you to make a new decision about storage. If you look at many different sites a day you easily end up in wasting your time by defining all those limits. BetterPrivacy needs much less configuration than the native settings manager and is easily accessible. You can use it to generally remove Flash cookies, but it also allows to set exclusion rules for those Flash cookies that you would like to keep. Moreover BetterPrivacy allows to seamlessly integrate Flash cookie deletion into the Firefox 'Clear Private Data' dialog.
d) BetterPrivacy allows quick and easy management of LSO storage without the need of consulting the "Global Manager" which is located on a special company website and possibly also tracks all your management actions. The company could have made this settings manager available from the right click menu but they didn't for some reason.Requirements:
